Afri Camps Experience

I recently visited AfriCamps Oakhurst in Wilderness and what a wonderful experience! It was the week of my daughters 11th birthday and so we decided to spoil her by taking the family to AfriCamps at Oakhurst Farm in Wilderness. Only about 45 minutes from Knysna where we live, it made for the perfect weekend getaway!

AfriCamps offers “boutique camping” or most commonly known as glamping. It’s a really cool concept and offers people the ability to go camping without having to have all the traditional camping kit such as tent, bedding, chairs etc. The tents are situated on farms and game reserves around the country and maintained by the owners of the farm. What is really appealing is that as you travel the country you can stay at a camp in the area  knowing exactly what you will be getting as each AfriCamps comes with standard design and services but obviously some unique activities based on the specific location of the camp.

Our specific stay was at Oakhurst farm where they offer AfriCamps tents plus their own unique accommodation. Each tent is wonderfully made up with a braai area, loung/kitchen with all the pots, pans and kitchen utensils you will ever need. There are two bedrooms, one with a double and the other with bunk beds but the lower bunk is a queen size bed so could fit 2 people. Right at the back is your toilet, basin and shower. Everything you could possibly need! The highlight of course with everyone was the lovely hot tub concept set up outside and which after heating it up with a fire for about 2 hours affords you a nice hot tub experience overlooking the magnificent forest! This is especially nice when the weather is cold and you are in a hot bath with steam rising up all around you!

There are a ton of activities on the farm and we kept the kids busy with Archery, horse riding, bike riding and a lovely dairy tour as the farm is essentially a dairy farm. Tired out by the end of the day, the kids could rest up in the hot tub!

One of the great aspects of staying at Africamps is the ability to order a pre-packed picnic basket for breakfast or a braai pack for dinner making it literally an arrive and cook situation without the hassle of shopping beforehand. We decided on a breakfast picnic and it comes nicely packaged with everything you could want for a scrumptious breakfast! There is also a beautifully stocked shop at reception which has all the essentials  including wood, fresh farm milk, sweets and locally produced frozen foods like pies, pizzas to add to your breakfasts, lunches or dinners.

All in all this makes for a great weekend away and our experience at Oakhurst was absolutely awesome! This is the perfect getaway for the whole family! It is unique, fun for the kids and as always great to get away into nature!
