A guide to Tuningi Safari Lodge

We were recently afforded the opportunity to visit Tuningi Safari Lodge which is a small private game lodge based in the Madikwe Game Reserve. It comprises of 12 rooms and takes 16 guests making this a nice, small and personalised bush lodge.

As you walk into the lodge you are greeted by an azure blue pool looking out over the bush with a lovely open lounge to the right and a bar and open dining deck to the left. Check in was down at the BOMA which is set under a beautiful big Tuningi Wild Fig tree. What makes this extra special is that it overlooks a small private watering hole where the lodge has built an underground hide allowing you to get really close to the animals coming down to drink . We were fortunate enough to have an elephant welcome us on the day!

Our rooms were spacious, with views into the bush and a lovely outside shower. There is also a fire place that warms up both the bathroom and bedroom during the cold winter months! As the lodge is ideally suited to families there are a couple of family rooms which consists of two big rooms, a lounge/dining room with a small kitchenette and a wide open deck. There are two pools in the lodge and a kids area with loads of games and toys for them to play with. The really special part is that the kids are taken on late morning game drives and learn all about the bush from the rangers in a safe and secure environment.

The morning and afternoon game drives are informative and led by expert guides so within minutes we were experiencing close encounters with Elephants, Rhino and Lions! After all the excitement, we enjoyed the afternoon sunsets sipping GNT’s and enjoying probably the most special time of the day in the bush! I think one of the highlights of this trip was experiencing wild dog and Lions up close and personal on our morning drive which was an experience not to be forgotten. Certainly a benefit of this reserve is not having a 100 other game vehicles or cars surrounding us, allowing us to enjoy the game viewing all to ourselves before opening it up to the other vehicles.

An amazing Dinner was served that night in a relaxed and easy environment reinforcing that this lodge is perfect for those wanting a taste of luxury coupled with personalised detailed attention in a relaxed atmosphere.

My 5 points of recommendation for this lodge would be :

1. The welcome and friendly atmosphere from all who work at the lodge make this an absolute delight
2. Ideal for families and young kids
3. The size of the lodge is perfect for people looking for something with a relaxed, personal and family like atmosphere.
4. The BOMA is perfectly situated for great game viewing at the lodge and includes an underground hide!
5. Incredible game viewing with expert led guides.
