Wander Wisely: Your Playful Guide to Responsible Travel

by | August 2, 2024 | Travel Blogs

Travelling is like cracking open a treasure chest of adventures, offering a world of places to explore, activities to try, and people to meet. Tourism accounted for 9.1% of global GDP in 2023 and created about 330 million jobs worldwide. However, tourism can also bring challenges, like trail erosion on Mt. Fuji or overcrowding in Machu Picchu. In Barcelona recently, protesters even used water pistols to make a point. Balancing exploration with respect is key for both travellers and locals.

Check out our tips for travelling responsibly to enjoy your adventure while respecting cultural differences, supporting local communities and sometimes travelling in a way that may not always be what you normally do but can enrich your journey more than you could ever have expected.

Dive into the Local Scene

Imagine being a cultural detective. Learn local phrases and try the traditional foods. It’s not just polite—it’s your ticket to a genuine adventure! You will be amazed at how much respect one gets from the people you are visiting when making just a little bit of effort to learn some local phrases. Food is also such an important part of our travels so try some street food, home cooked meals and get to know the country you are visiting on another level.

Tread Lightly on the Earth

You wouldn’t litter your best friend’s house, so why do it on vacation? Go green as much as possible and support eco-friendly hotels and transport. Keep nature pristine for the explorers who come after you.

Boost the Local Economy

Trade big chains for charming local spots. Think of it as a treasure hunt for unique finds and hidden gems while supporting the community.

Respect Wildlife

Be the David Attenborough of your own safari. Admire animals from afar and choose activities that protect their habitats. Remember, you’re in their living room!

Be a Curious and Respectful Visitor

Research is your trusty map. Know local laws, customs, and whether that cool place is actually open. The more you know, the better your adventure.

Timing is Everything

Avoid the tourist traffic jam by visiting during off-peak seasons. You’ll get the VIP experience without the lines—and maybe a new perspective, too.

Choose Your Own Adventure

Forget the crowded “must-see” lists. Follow your heart (and taste buds) to experiences that truly excite you. I’m a sucker for being one of those that try do too much and it has always been those moments of sometimes simply walking the streets which I have found to me the most memorable.

Savor the Moment

Some places like to linger over meals, so relax and enjoy the ride. If you’re in a rush, opt for a quick snack. Be a ” slow tourist” and consider minimizing day trips to popular spots. Day trippers often spend less as they don’t book hotels or dine locally, which can strain local resources due to high tourist numbers but low economic benefits. Instead, extend your stay to contribute more meaningfully to the local economy and enjoy a deeper connection with the destination.

Keep Calm and Adventure On

Travel mishaps happen. Missed trains and lost bags are just part of the story. Keep your cool and embrace the unexpected turns—they might lead to the best tales.

With these tips in your travel toolkit, you’re ready to explore the world responsibly and with a smile.

Happy travels, fellow wanderer!
